Insights into MTE’s Formulation: How Super Are These Superfoods?
6 Minute Read

It’s not hard to figure out what MTE’s made of – it’s everywhere across our site. But you may be curious about why we chose the specific combinations of adaptogens, nootropics and superfoods that we did. Was it stabbing around in the dark and picking the most popular ones? No – not even close.

Our founders and formulators researched the life out of dozens and dozens of possibilities, and worked tirelessly to find the perfect combination of bioactive plants that would become more than the sum of their parts to promote energy, focus, mood, rest and recovery, stress response, inflammation, immunity, and gut health.

What’s in a “feel-good daily greens powder”? Let us tell you about the stalwart superfoods in ours:

Amaranth

If you ask us, amaranth should be a staple in everyone’s diet, regardless of whether you’re getting it from a healthy energy drink or as a side dish with dinner. It’s been a staple in many culture’s diets for millennia – since the Neolithic Revolution about 10000 years ago. That’s gotta say something, right?

The nutritional profile of amaranth is insane. Dry weight amaranth contains:

  • 14.3% protein
  • 7.4% healthy fats
  • 26.7% fiber
  • Calcium (bones, muscle function, nerve signaling)
  • Iron (brain health, energy, muscle function)
  • Magnesium (mood, stress management, sleep quality)
  • Phosphorus (kidneys, DNA building, energy)
  • Manganese (metabolism, antioxidant, wound healing)
  • Copper (mitochondrial function, anti-inflammatory, collagen)
  • Zinc (blood sugar, brain and nerve function, immunity)
  • Potassium (muscle function, blood pressure, nerve signaling)
  • Thiamine (cell energy, neurochemical communication, gut health)
  • Riboflavin (energy conversion, cell growth and repair, vision)
  • Niacin (cholesterol, skin, joints)
  • B6 (red blood cells, energy, mood)
  • Vitamin E (cell integrity, immunity, vision)

Amaranth is also a sustainable superfood, as it’s drought-resistant and grows quickly. Research on amaranth’s health benefits have revealed its ability to benefit heart health, lower bad cholesterol, improve immune responsiveness, protect liver health, acts as an anti-inflammatory and antioxidant, and more. Kind of a no-brainer there.

Spirulina

Possibly the most popular superfood in green health drinks is the weird blue algae we call spirulina. While the goop itself is almost as old as life on earth, it wasn’t until the 16th century that people discovered its nutritional value, and the mid-20th century before cultivation began on a global scale.

Spirulina’s also got a pretty impressive nutritional profile. Dry weight, it contains:

  • 65% protein (contains all essential amino acids)
  • 6% healthy fats
  • 25% fiber
  • 10% moisture
  • Phycocyanin (blue pigment with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties)
  • Beta-carotene (converted to vitamin A in the body)
  • Zeaxanthin (carotenoid important for eye health)
  • Lutein (carotenoid important for eye health)
  • Chlorophyll (green color with detoxifying properties)

Spirulina also contains many of the same trace vitamins and minerals as amaranth. Coupled with its complete amino acid profile, spirulina is a powerhouse when it comes to a superfood that supports all the vital processes in your body.

Chicory Root

Chicory root is the newest addition to MTE’s energy greens blend, and we think it was the perfect thing to round out our advanced formula of 13 adaptogens, nootropics and superfoods. Chicory isn’t your typical superfood; instead of being packed with dozens of really nutritious elements, it’s packed with one powerful, multitalented element: inulin. Oh, and about 99 others. But that’s a lot to fit in here.

Inulin is a prebiotic fiber that demonstrates several positive actions on the body, which is likely why we find chicory in pharmacopoeias as early as 2000 years ago. This soluble fiber nourishes your gut microbiota, promoting the growth of good bacteria and aiding digestion. It can also contribute to feelings of fullness, potentially aiding weight management.

Among the many actions of inulin on the body, major benefits include:

  • Improved digestive health
  • Increased immunity
  • Liver health support
  • Blood sugar regulation
  • Reduced inflammation

There’s also evidence to say that chicory root has antimicrobial, antioxidant, antitumor, and antimalarial capacities. Along with inulin, the reason chicory boasts so many abilities is likely due to the over 100 distinct bioactive compounds found in this woody little root.

And That’s Not All, Folks!

In our carefully-researched 13-ingredient formula, every ingredient offers bioactive benefits, so some of our classified adaptogens and nootropics are superfoods, too! Two birds, one stone, if you will. For instance:

  • Maca is an adaptogenic superfood that helps promote better stress resilience on a biological level by modulating neurochemicals.
  • Ashwagandha is an adaptogenic superfood that supports cognitive function, boosts energy, relieves stress, and helps protect the body from oxidative stress.
